NEWS FROM FIFTH HOUSE LODGE, SEPTEMBER 28, 2008

In Chinese five-element theory there are five seasons, not four. The fifth season -- late summer -- is the time of ripening and harvest before the frosty death of fall. We are in that fifth season now. The green hangs on, but there is a different slant to the light. The darkness falls earlier and lingers longer in the morning.

The changing seasons are what I love most about New England. Here at Fifth House Lodge we will be taking down screens and putting up storm windows soon. Already we've had several fires in the fireplace in the living room. After last winter's heavy snowfall I thought I'd dread winter this year. But here I am, already drawing in, slowing down and looking forward to enjoying the silence of the winter woods.

Happy late summer to you, and I hope you will find your way here soon.
